He will not attack back and you can ride him after the beating.

Shadowmere has allot of hp and an insane hp regen rate so you can pound him without caution. I like to use a plain iron weapon for this to not do to much damage. After you have got Shadowmere from quest-line you can back him up to a wall and continuously beat him with your weapon.
